Koki Uchiyama’s Obsessive Assassin Steals the Show in ‘Firefly Wedding’ Premiere

A Twisted Romance Begins in the Meiji Era

The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Oreko Tachibana’s hit manga, Firefly Wedding (Hotaru no Yomeiri), has officially made its debut, leaving fans swooning and terrified in equal measure. Set during the Meiji era, the dark romantic suspense series follows Satoko Kirigaya, a terminally ill noblewoman, and Shinpei Goto, a deadly assassin who develops an unhinged, all-consuming obsession with her.

In the tense premiere episode, Satoko finds her life targeted by unknown assailants. To survive a dire situation, she makes a desperate proposal to her killer, Shinpei: “Marry me.” What begins as a desperate lie to stay alive quickly spiraled into a uniquely dark dynamic that hooked viewers right out of the gate.

Koki Uchiyama Delivers a Masterclass in “Yandere” Energy

The standout highlight of Episode 1 was undoubtedly Shinpei Goto, brought to life by voice acting veteran Koki Uchiyama. Known for portraying complex and dark characters, Uchiyama’s performance captured both Shinpei’s terrifying ruthlessness and his intensely innocent, overly heavy affection for Satoko.

Fans instantly took to social media to express their love-hate relationship with Shinpei’s chaotic charm:

  • “Uchiyama’s voice brings so much depth and persuasion to Shinpei’s unhinged nature!”
  • “The gap between his innocent smile and terrifying assassin skills is insane.”
  • “He said ‘I’m a bit overly intense with my love, but I’ll make you happy’—terrifying, yet I’m completely hooked!”

A Strong Heroine and Stellar Production

Beyond Shinpei’s wild behavior, viewers showered praise on Satoko, voiced by Lynn. Despite her weak heart and aristocratic background, Satoko proved herself to be a remarkably resilient heroine who relies on her wit and resolve rather than playing a passive damsel in distress.

Produced by david production (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Cell at Work!) and directed by Takahiro Kamei, the anime’s gripping atmosphere and vivid visuals set high expectations for the rest of the season. With two lead characters tied together by entirely different motives, fans are eagerly waiting to see how this dangerous dynamic unfolds in Episode 2.
