A Magical Return to Cephiro!
The legendary CLAMP classic, Magic Knight Rayearth, is officially making its grand return! On October 3, a special Japan Premiere event was held at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, gathering the star-studded main cast to celebrate the upcoming broadcast. Fans in attendance were treated to an early screening of Episodes 1 and 2, along with the highly anticipated reveal of the new designs for the three Rune Gods (Mashin).
The event featured the main voice cast, who shared their excitement, deep love for the original series, and some of the struggles they faced during the initial recording sessions:
- Ayane Sakura as Hikaru Shidou
- Rumi Okubo as Umi Ryuuzaki
- Rie Takahashi as Fuu Hououji
- Saori Hayami as Princess Emeraude
- Yuki Ono as Zagato
Overcoming the Pressure of a Legendary Legacy
During the talk show, the cast opened up about the immense pressure of rebooting such an iconic franchise. Ayane Sakura, a self-proclaimed lifelong fan of CLAMP, confessed that she struggled early on in the dubbing process.
“Everyone on the staff and cast felt a deep sense of responsibility carrying the weight of Rayearth on their shoulders,” Sakura revealed. “We had to deeply consider the characters’ lives beyond what is shown in the anime, but also learn to relax and perform naturally. Finding that balance and switching my mindset was very difficult at the beginning.”
Rumi Okubo, who grew up watching the original 1990s anime, shared her emotional journey of landing the role of Umi. “During the audition, I went in with the mindset that no one in the voice acting industry loved Rayearth more than me. Believing in myself is what brought me here today,” she said, highlighting the intense dedication of the cast.
What to Expect from the New Series
The voice actors also teased what fans should look forward to in this modern adaptation:
- Hikaru’s Journey: Sakura noted that Hikaru embodies love, and her actions in saving Cephiro—navigating a world that isn’t just black and white—will be a major theme of the story.
- Umi’s Dual Nature: Okubo focused on balancing Umi’s cool-beauty appearance with her honest, sometimes childish 14-year-old personality.
- Fuu’s Gentle Gaze: Takahashi cherished Fuu’s unique, laid-back perspective and soft demeanor during her performance.
- Emeraude’s Deep Emotions: Hayami emphasized portraying the immense strength and love within the Princess’s heart.
- Zagato’s Presence: In a lighthearted moment, Ono joked that fans should keep an eye on Zagato’s impressively wide shoulders!
New Rune God (Mashin) Visuals Revealed!
One of the biggest highlights of the premiere was the unveiling of the newly designed Mashin. Okubo expressed her excitement about the fresh look: “While it is different from both the original manga and the 90s anime, we wanted to honor the past while exploring what new things we could achieve today. Seeing this new form made me incredibly happy!”
With a passionate cast, stunning new visuals, and a deep respect for CLAMP’s original masterpiece, the new Magic Knight Rayearth anime is shaping up to be an absolute must-watch for both old-school fans and newcomers alike!
